Labuan Toe

Next April, you may well be remembering more of your service career than you thought possible. Seeing old faces, hearing stories and anecdotes helped on by the odd glass or two will have your memory working overtime. Why not get a head start & leave some of your printable memories here?

Labuan Toe was an affliction well known to anyone who spent time on the island in Borneo. Every morning, sick quarters would see a queue of those unlucky enough to have been attacked by the monsoon drainage ditches while trying to navigate their way back to the billet after an evening in the NAFFI.

Your Mission Possible

There is still time to help find more of the entry before next April. We are not in contact with them for a variety of reasons: Some have died, some have emigrated, some don’t want to be contacted and some don’t know about us. Trying to find who moved to Pétaouchnock is not going to be easy but you like a challenge and like most of these games, the winner gets points – and points mean prizes.
An analysis of those we are in contact with would suggest the following breakdown:

Happy Birthday

Just in case you were short of an excuse to celebrate, you might be astonished to realize that your web site is one year old already since that fateful day when the champagne bottle was smashed to pieces during the launch.
In our short year, the site has had over 3000 visits and over 12000 page views which gives you some idea of what you can prove with numbers.
Although the site has had some success in keeping in touch with the faithful few, we are still trying to trace more of the entry so anything you can do or suggest would be very welcome.
Cheers...

Try a younger Navigator

Opera 11, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 11, Safari 4,
...
If you are still using older versions of popular Internet browser or navigator programs, you will find the current generation run faster with more emphasis on what is on the Internet page rather than cluttering the top of the screen with a myriad of menu options. These updates are all free so it's a cheaper way of making your computer run faster for nothing.

Thanks to Chris Tett

Once again, many thanks are due to Chris Tett for all the time, trouble & energy spent in organizing a successful reunion. We all appreciate what you do (with help from the rest of your team at home).
Those that were unable to attend this time were remembered with a toast to Absent Friends. Next year on 20 April, we hope to share a drink with you. Don't be afraid to book the Hotel early - they have already started taking reservations.
Some pictures on the site will give you an idea of the venue but next year the reunion will start at lunchtime.

Reunion

Sad to say, I will not be with you at the weekend but I wish you all a great time.

Radar web site

A site that might be of interest, especially to ground radar fitters.
www.radarpages.co.uk. I often wondered what I was doing at Staxton Wold.

Help wanted with names

It seems that some 92nd were missing from our original list. To help with the search for all the 92nd, please can anyone help with some answers or even best guesses!
  1. How many 92nd originally joined up on 22nd May 1959?
  2. What was the name of the chap that died on Summer camp?
  3. The following names were labeled as being being ex-91st. At least some of them are wrong. Can you remember any of them? Any information would be most welcome.
  • Roy Andrews
  • Mick Benn
  • Chris Bradburn
  • Geoff Davies
  • Simon Ellis
  • G Graham
  • Clive Ing
  • John Kennedy
  • Pat Scrace
  • ? Sizen
  • Pete Webber
Thanks very much. Enter here or email me

What's an Atom, Walt?

You may have noticed that many blogs and websites use RSS (or Atom feeds). RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication but that may not get you very far. Put another way, the website can tell you when something new has been added to save you having to go to the site to find out.

Not much point if you are only following a single site but this can be useful if several sites are involved.

To use this RSS feature you can use a feed reader or you can use your Internet navigator or browser.

For the browsers:
At the bottom of this page (or other websites that have an RSS feed you would like to follow), left click on Subscribe to: Posts (Atom) and follow the instructions. You will then be able to see the RSS feeds on your browser toolbar.

For a feed reader such as: http://www.google.com/reader:

At the bottom of this page, right click on Subscribe to: Posts (Atom) and copy link address
Add this address (URL) to the reader.
Add addresses of other sites having this feature that you want to follow.
Once you have mastered this, you can impress your grandchildren.

Any problems or queries? Then comment on this post.

Feedback

Those who used the old Feedback spreadsheet will hopefully find this easier to use so please continue to send in your positive or negative feedback.
Feedback, as we know, means prizes...

Hi Alan, thanks for the link to the Indian website. The World's Fastest Indian is a favouite movie of mine.

I think missing name in middle row of 92D is Rob Lewsey

Further finds in class 92E. From the initial entry photograph I think that Ken Jarvis is in the centre of the front rank and Roy Smith is on the far left of the centre rank.

Francis is third from left of front rank in class 92A

Hi Alan
The picture of class 92E lists Francis Johns at far right of rear rank. I am pretty certain that it is Dave Bridges, he was discharged early because of his failing eyesight. Front row far right is "Titch Philips" isn't it? Third from left of centre rank is McPherson.

No complaints Alan. I log in most days and I'm just glad someone like you knows enough to set up the website and keep it going.

What's a Diode?

After more than 50 years since I first soldered a resistor to a valve base and spent hours trying to understand the theory of holes moving from one material to another, with current going backwards through thin air, controlled by my own home grown circuit board, I'm ready to admit that I'm ready to retire from the technology business. Fortunately I have grandsons who can teach me to "tweet", whatever that means.

My congratulations to the Goalkeeper for puting this Blog in place.

However, I'm reminded of the story of the guy and his girlfriend who visited the local wishing well. The guy made his wish and, in an instant, he was endowed with the largest ----- in the county. "Great" said his girlfriend, "Now you've got it, what do you think you're going to do with it?"

Useful or not?

As you have seen, live video is part of this website and will be active during the reunion in April.
In order to prepare/simplify the logistics involved, it would be helpful to know if anyone thinks this feature worth using. The same question also applies to the possibility of making voice and video calls to the reunion via Skype.

Q1 Will you be watching the live video?
Q2 Will you be calling via Skype?
There are no costs involved to anyone watching.

Thanks for your input.
